IVS Summerfest & Beer Mile

This year's event will be held on August 19th, 2017 starting at 3:00 pm. The location remains the same as previous years at the Exposition Gardens in Peoria, IL (1601 W. Northmoor Rd)

Registration is now available online through getmeregistered.com.  The cost is $10 for current IVS members and $15 for non-members.

You don't have to run the race to register.  Come on out and have some fun with your running friends!

There is no requirement that you drink beer in order to run the mile. However, if you do wish to drink then you must provide four beers or drinks of your choice for your run.

The Beer Mile will be run in heats depending on the number of participants in order to minimize the crowding at the tables in the transition zone.  Although this will be a timed event, it is non-competitive and no award will be presented.

IVS will provide hot dogs, chips, soda, water and (of course) beer for the cookout after the run.  We can always use a few volunteers for grilling and setup/cleanup. Please contact Jerry Kolb to volunteer, or for any other questions related to the event.

Feel free to bring a game (bags, washers, etc.) as we will have the beer garden all to ourselves.

Any proceeds will go toward the IVS Half Marathon (although we are really just doing this for the hell of it!).

Official Beer Mile Rules
  • Each competitor drinks four cans of beer and runs four laps on a track (Start - beer/lap, beer/lap, beer/lap, beer/lap - Finish)
  • Beer must be consumed before the lap is begun, within the transition area which is the 10 meter zone before the start/finish line on a 400m track.
  • The race begins with the drinking of the first beer in the last meter of the transition zone to ensure the competitors run a complete mile.
  • Women also drink four beers in four laps (past rules only required ladies to drink three beers).
  • Competitors must drink canned beer and the cans should not be less than 355 ml (standard can volume) or 12 oz (imperial equivalent).  Bottles may be substituted for cans as long as they are at least 12 oz (355 ml) in volume.
  • No specialized cans or bottles may be used that give an advantage by allowing the beer to pour at a faster rate, i.e. "super mega mouth cans" or "wide mouth bottles" are prohibited.
  • Beer cans must not be tampered with in any manner, i.e. no shotgunning or puncturing of the can except for opening the can by the tab at the top.  The same applies with bottles - no straws or other aids are allowed in order to aid in the speed of pouring.
  • Beer must be a minimum of 5% alcohol by volume.
  • Each beer can must not be opened until the competitor enters the transition zone on each lap.
  • Competitors who vomit before they finish the race must complete one penalty lap at the end of the race (immediately after the completion of their 4th lap).  Note:  Vomiting more than once during the race still requires only one penalty lap at the end.
  • It is strongly recommended, when attempting official records, to tip the empty beer can or bottle over your head at the end of a chug to verify an empty vessel.
